The team chose the title for today’s blog “Are we finished?” We thought it was very appropriate for a few reasons. First, we accomplished so much, but the work is not finished at the Enrichment Center. We could have stayed another week. Secondly, the work in mission fields such as this one are making an impact on lives, but there are so many more to help. Thirdly, Jesus asked us to share his love with others and there is much work to do here. So, are we finished...no. Hopefully you will consider helping too.
This mornings devotion led by Amy focused on how to pray. What great question with so many right responses. The Bible says pray without ceasing. We discussed how we have been invited to have a relationship with our Heavenly Father through prayer. There are times for private prayers, prayers with others, requests, asking for help, and thankful prayers too. But one key message is God wants to be a part of our lives and he hears our prayers. Her devotion was closed with a heart felt prayer that moved us all. Afterwards the team sang happy birthday to Amy’s daughter Gabby and sent her a video text message.
Karen took the reigns on preparing and cooking meals today. From turkey sandwiches for the group to a hearty spaghetti lunch for the kids. Everyone enjoyed the hot nutritious lunch, especially Wayne (who is the official taste-tester).
The construction crew was hard at it again today. With a mountain of punch list items to-do and some late additions, we worked hard to make sure the priority items we completed. Tom and Todd installed shelves to make improve storage and organization in the kitchen.
A major milestone today was the completion of the baños (bathrooms). They now have stalls, doors, vanities, toilets, and mirrors in beautiful hand-made frames. Mike showed his master-craftsmanship as he made some cuts with the circular saw for the mirror frames his shop teacher probably wouldn’t approve of.
As you can see by the photos, everyone loved the mirrors!
Even with the drive to finish off the punch list, Mike let Jon have a 10 minute break.
The artists led the final day of projects with the moms and kids. You know the kids love these BLC women and the art projects when they line up outside the Enrichment center 30 minutes before class begins!
In the kids class they did the last watercolor painting of earth and successfully completed their books. The books contained watercolor projects for the older kids and coloring pages for the younger kids. The projects are about how God created everything in the 7 days of creation. The watercolor kids were very talented and they put a lot of effort into making there books. The mothers were striving to make their artwork perfect and you can really see the efforts they put into their projects. The results so far have been incredible.
The art team assembled over 15 packets in under 15 minutes to make sure every kid received their finished project. Wow, nice job! The kids were very grateful and loved being with the BLC ladies. The amount of hugs and smiles they received made them feel very special and appreciated.
Wayne implemented his design of the kitchen countertop, which included pouring a concrete surface, grinding it down, and sealing it. This morning Wayne and Jon applied polyurethane to it. The counter top turned out beautiful and received many compliments. Sealing this surface prevents water damage and ensures a sanitary surface to prepare food on for meals. We also had to arm wrestle on the countertop to make sure it was sturdy enough!
Megan and Karen led the design for the entrance to the restrooms. With a lot of thought and layout, they developed a creative way to show boys and girls which side to use. Once again, Karen’s talents showed through and the kids loved it too.
Today we had a different visitor. A small kitten joined us for most of the day and added some joy to a long, stressful day. What a great photo by Todd. The kitten looks a little more ferocious than she really is.
Again today the kids had their enrichment classes - we watched them practice jujitsu. A special demonstration was given by Abraham and his student to explain this martial art further. Check out these moves.
In between art classes, Diane found time to finish the design to remember the group and BLC. We watched as she carefully finished this painting with ease. She is very talented and commented on how she wished she could have spent more time teaching advanced techniques to all.
The Tingles loved the design and the team chose this for our team photo location. If you see Diane at church, as her about the meaning of the design.
Tonight at the debrief we discussed our “wow” moments and heard some more great perspectives from the team. Once again the bueno awards were given out. Jon was recognized for his efforts on construction projects, the kitchen counter top, and writing the blog. Sally Jo received and extra special Muy Beuno award for support on many projects ranging from serving the kids to organizing the supplies for all programs. She always finds a way to help everyone out and has a kind word and hug for us all. Sally Jo has been a part of this program with her husband Chuck since the beginning and the Tingles showed their sincere appreciation for all the years of support.
Finally, the Tingles had also given us a homework assignment and tonight was the report out. We were asked to reflect on our week here and think about how we will take this experience back with us and put it into action. As each person shared their plans, you could hear the impact it made on us personally and our goal to integrate this into our lives and others around us.
