Shortly afterwards the team was met by Ronald, Hillary, and Gloria and then off to the Enrichment Center. Many of the mission team members climbed into the “ambulance” (which is one of Enrich mission’s vehicles that is actually an ambulance but converted to transport mission teams around).
Mike, Jon, and Wayne road in the back of the pickup truck to get the full experience of downtown Matagalpa driving and enjoy the wind in our hair (or lack of hair).
When you arrive at the Enrichment center you can either drive down the steep road or walk the steps. The center is a really beautiful building and great space to serve lunch, teach children, help the neighbors, and worship the Lord. For many of the group that have been on previous mission trips to Matagalpa there was a feeling of amazement on how far the project has come in such a short time.
The views from the Enrichment center are breathtaking and we enjoyed the Orioles that visited the near by trees.
Our first task was to unload and sort all of the donations everyone graciously gave. The Tingles we very thankful and explained how they will be used to teach the children to learn new things, but also encourage them to stay in school. After a quick lunch, Megan and Wayne led us on a tour of the surrounding neighborhood. We saw the children’s school and the river that many use for washing their clothes. As we walked passed the homes we were greeted by many with smiling faces.
It was hot today, so the Tingles treated the group to a cold Coca Cola. But this was no ordinary way to drink a beverage. The Coca Cola was served in a plastic bag. With some quick instructions the team was able to refresh ourselves and have some fun too.
We headed back to the hotel to practice our songs in Spanish and prepare for church.
Tonight was the first evening worship service to be held in the Enrichment center. It was a very special night for the Tingles, the team, and many neighbors who joined.
Wayne led the worship service and the BLC mission team had the privilege to sing three songs in Spanish. It was an experience I’m sure we will not forget. The energy from the congregation was powerful and we were moved by the enthusiasm of everyone’s praise to God. Sam and Abraham each gave a testimony to the group and shared their first hand experiences with God’s presence in their lives. Sam shared her testimony of God’s healing power and showed her courage as she told her story in English and then in Spanish with very little help. It was a very emotional moment. Abraham explained the calling he received and how God had a plan for him. This plan led him to a life of service in Matagalpa where he now teaches the kids Jujitsu and shares Gods love.
It was so great to interact with all the kids. They loved sitting next to us during the service and sharing “high fives” when they left. What a great evening we had. The Lord was truly present with us tonight.
After dinner, we had a debrief session. During this time we shared some of our “wow” moments we’ve had so far on the trip. We also learned a lot more about the purpose and goals of Enrich Missions. A highlight for us all was receiving a personal card of with our own bible verse and a hand-written letter to provide us with encouragement. Thank you so much Sue Dietsche for this gift.
